A relationship chart is arranged like a grid. One side asks how the shared ancestor is related to you. The other side asks how the shared ancestor is related to the other person.

Where the row and column meet, you find the relationship.

  • Great-Grandparent
  • 2X Great-Grandparent
  • 3X Great-Grandparent
  • 4X Great-Grandparent
  • 5X Great-Grandparent

Then the boxes show relationships like:

  • Sibling
  • Aunt or Uncle
  • Great Aunt or Uncle
  • Niece or Nephew
  • 1st Cousin

The box says:

“1st Cousin”

That means you are first cousins.

Now let’s move back one generation.

You and another person share the same great-grandparents.

The word “removed” sounds dramatic.

It is not. No one was banished.

Who do both people descend from?

Step 2: Count generations from each person to the shared ancestor

For example:

  • You to parent = 1

  • You to 2X great-grandparent = 4

Do the same for the other person.

Step 3: The smaller number helps determine cousin level

If both people are the same number of generations from the shared ancestor:

  • 2 generations away = 1st cousins
  • 3 generations away = 2nd cousins
  • 4 generations away = 3rd cousins
  • 5 generations away = 4th cousins

Step 4: The difference between the numbers is the “removed” part

If one person is 3 generations from the shared ancestor and the other is 4 generations away, they are one generation apart.
